Name Date State County Public Building Problem Location Problem Description Detailed Comments Suggestions
01/16/2013
Pennsylvania
Montgomery
Public school
Schuylkill Elementary School
Building condition (cracks, leaks)
A water main break forced students to evacuate. This has been a recurring issue in the township as very old pipes are showing multiple leaks.
A comprehensive areawide assessment should be conducted on the water pipes to understand the full scope and then the appropriate management (i.e., maintenance, replacement, upgrade).
10/14/2012
Georgia
Lowndes
Public library
South Georgia Regional Library
Building condition (cracks, leaks)
Aging red-brick building with all the hallmarks: stained ceiling; old carpet; poor HVAC; ruined outside landscape; insufficient space for computers and modern wiring; overall limited square feet of space for patrons.
While the voter referendum of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax will help for a new building, this facility has been neglected through the years and better steward management is needed moving forward.
07/24/2012
Louisiana
Livingston
Municipal building
Livingston Parish Courthouse
Building condition (cracks, leaks)
Rainwater found seeping through ceiling of the aging courthouse built in 1941 into three judge's offices and three courtrooms. Also, backed up water from drains spilled into clerk's office and courtroom.
An extensive building assessment must take place in this courthouse with a scheduled program of repairs. If not, computer equipment and records will be affected and the judicial system will not optimally serve county residents.
04/01/2012
Tennessee
Sequatchie
Municipal building
Sequatchie County Fair building
Building condition (cracks, leaks)
Serious roof damage to building with over 25 leaks, going on for three years. Tarps, plastic tablecloths, and tents are used to cover equipment, while garbage cans, buckets, and storage containers catch rainwater.
Replace patchwork fixes with an integrated, comprehensive maintenance and renovation program. Allocate funds by the users of such public services.
12/10/2011
Massachusetts
Norfolk
Public library
Norfolk Public Library
Visual observations (damage, mold)
Pine clapboard siding on an older addition of the library is severely deteriorating, causing moisture problems that can lead to serious mold inside the building.
While initial funding for the project has come from a state grant and local budget is limited, the remaining can come from private donors (i.e., foundations, local citizens, and businesses). Also, the town can offer to use this siding project as a hands-on learning initiative for nearby builders/contractors to help curtail the costs.
11/25/2011
New Jersey
Burlington
Public school
Willingboro High School
Facilty comfort (aesthetic, HVAC)
Public high school forced to shut down at beginning of school year due to mold-infested areas found in building. Remediation and restoration project was delayed for two months from Sept.-Nov.
School boards should emphasize condition of schools at meetings to address this growing problem. States should also be aware of the issue. Inspections should take place during summer and not at start of school year. Contractors should bid and implement projects in close coordination with school officials, leveraging support of businesses on school board. This will streamline the process and avoid delays.
