Electricity
Baltimore National Pike and N. Rolling Rd.
Facility condition (lines, poles)
Most utility poles around intersection are carrying up to eight electric lines. Some lines are unraveling and some poles are leaning. Also, traffic lights are hanging along thin wires. Storms may pose problems to this network.
Consider bundling lines or grounding the most crucial ones to prevent outages. Also, install sturdy poles for traffic lights.

Duncan Rd. and Bradley St.
Visual observations (rust, sparks)
A small utility line leading to the substation at the corner has its insulation unraveling. Also wooden poles show marked signs of age, blackened at the bottom. Too many lines possibly suggest redundancy in the network.
Upgrade this substation with newer equipment and replace damaged lines leading to it. Future costs may be avoided with action now.

Natural Gas
Springfield area
Facility condition (lines, poles)
Columbia Gas announces it will replace 15 miles of eighty-year old, steel and cast iron natural gas lines. With smaller projects already underway, they will use modern plastic, corrosive-resistant pipes that allows expansion in cold weather.
Though an expensive undertaking, this is a much needed project. The gas utility is thinking in the long-term to re-invest in critical assets. Other utilities should take note and use their recent gains into reinvesting in core infrastructure.

FPL's new smart meters are a great 21st century transition to a smart grid: online real-time analysis of energy use, accurate meter readings, and reduction of power outages. Yet, local customers are at backlash with FPL afraid meters will start fires, eliminates meter jobs, and invades privacy.
FPL should provide better client education to customers: testimonials across the country, scientists who know the device, and cost savings reports of electricity supply.

Electricity
Walnut Street between Main and Washington
Facility condition (lines, poles)
About two electric poles are leaning along Walnut Street, near downtown Champaign. These old, wooden poles also carry multiple lines (3-4) between them, suggesting significant load. One even carries up to four transformers. Storms can pose a threat to this block-long network.
Work on getting utility lines grounded to prevent damage to lines and poles as well as safety concerns for pedestrians and motorists. Also, replace existing poles with sturdier non-conductive material.
